What to Expect at Your First Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Appointment with a St. Clair West Dentist

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new dental plan offered by the Government of Canada that allows Canadians to access affordable dental care for families and individuals who may not have had coverage before. At Tinto Dentistry, we’re proud to be one of the first dental offices in the St. Clair West community to welcome CDCP patients.

If you’re booking your first CDCP appointment in Toronto, here’s what you can expect when you visit our office.

Step 1: Your Appointment with the Hygienist

Your first appointment will likely take around 90 minutes. This gives our team time to review your medical and dental history and start building a plan tailored to your needs.

Here’s what usually happens:

  • X-rays (radiographs): These help us detect hidden issues like cavities, gum disease, or infection before they start to hurt.
  • Professional dental cleaning (scaling): Your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, including spots that brushing and flossing can’t reach. This step is the most important part to establish healthy gums and preventing gum disease and cavities.
  • Gum health check: After your cleaning, we’ll measure the health of your gums
  • Intra-oral scan: Using our new Itero Lumina scanner, we can take a 3D scan of your mouth in order to show you where problems can exist and help us formulate a thorough plan.

Step 2: Comprehensive Dental Exam

Once the hygienist is finished, Dr. Tinto or Dr. De Billy will carefully review your X-rays and perform a comprehensive examination. During this step we check for:

  • Diseases of the skin, throat and tongue such as oral cancer
  • Cavities, gum disease, or other issues of the tooth
  • Evaluate the current condition of any fillings, crowns, or dental work you already have to help anticipate here future problems may arise.

Step 3: Diagnosis and Preventive Planning

After your exam, Dr. Tinto or Dr. De Billy will make sure to show any of the problems that arise and explain it in clear, simple terms. If we think any treatment needs to get completed, we will prioritize the most urgent issues and then explain where we can make improvements

For patients who may need advanced treatment, such as dental implants or Invisalign, we’ll also discuss how those services fit into your care plan.

What to Bring to Your CDCP Appointment

To make sure your visit runs smoothly, please bring:

  • Your CDCP card – this confirms your eligibility and ensures coverage for your appointment.
  • A list of your medications – along with any allergies or health conditions, so we can safely provide care.
