Manulife Dental Insurance at Tinto Dentistry
Accepting Manulife dental patients in Corso Italia, St. Clair West, and surrounding Toronto neighbourhoods
If you have Manulife dental coverage through work, a group association, or an individual plan, you can use your benefits at Tinto Dentistry. We work with Manulife regularly, can almost always direct bill, and aim to give you a clear picture of your costs before any treatment begins.
Many of our patients have Manulife dental coverage
Manulife is one of the largest group benefits providers in Canada. You might have Manulife coverage through your employer’s benefits package, a professional or trade association, a retirement plan, or an individual health and dental policy.
Manulife administers coverage under a few different plan names — you might see it referred to as Manulife Financial, GroupHEALTH (which Manulife acquired), or through an association plan that uses Manulife as the underwriter. If your insurance card or benefits booklet says Manulife, or if your claims are submitted through Manulife’s portal, we can work with your plan.
Not sure whether your plan qualifies? Just call us at (416) 651-1745 and we’ll help you figure it out.
Before your appointment, we can:
- Check your Manulife benefits using your group number and member ID
- Provide a treatment estimate with your expected share of costs
- Submit predeterminations for larger treatments like crowns or implants
- Coordinate benefits if you have coverage under two plans
Questions about your Manulife coverage? Call us at (416) 651-1745 or book online — we’ll take it from there.
What to bring to your appointment
- Your Manulife insurance card (physical or on the Manulife mobile app)
- Your group number and member or certificate ID
- Your date of birth and the policyholder’s date of birth if different from yours
If you have misplaced your card, you can usually find your plan details through the Manulife plan member portal or your employer’s HR department.
What Manulife may help cover
What your Manulife plan covers depends on the specific plan your employer or association has set up. Most standard Manulife dental plans include some combination of the following:
Preventive and basic care
- Routine dental exams
- Dental x-rays
- Teeth cleanings (scaling and polishing) — most Manulife plans include between 6 and 16 scaling units per benefit year
- Fluoride treatments
- Fissure sealants
Basic restorative
- Tooth-coloured and amalgam fillings
- Simple tooth extractions
- Emergency dental treatment
Major restorative (where included in your plan)
- Dental crowns
- Bridges
- Dentures
- Root canals
- Surgical extractions
Orthodontics and other services
- Invisalign and traditional braces, up to a lifetime maximum
- Nightguards for bruxism
- Dental implants — an increasing number of Manulife plans now include implant coverage
- Periodontal treatment
- Therapeutic Botox for jaw clenching, TMJ pain, or chronic headaches
What affects how much your plan covers
Even within Manulife, no two plans are identical. A few factors that determine what you will actually pay out of pocket:
Annual maximum. Most plans have a cap on what they will pay per benefit year — commonly somewhere between $1,000 and $2,500 for basic and major services combined. Once you hit your maximum, any remaining costs are your responsibility until your plan renews.
Coverage percentage. Preventive care is often covered at a higher percentage than major work. Your plan might cover cleanings at 80% but crowns at 50%, for example.
Scaling units. Rather than covering a set number of cleanings, Manulife plans typically allocate between 6 and 16 scaling units per benefit year. We will check your unit allowance before your hygiene appointment so there are no surprises.
Frequency limits. Exams may be covered once per year, and bitewing x-rays are typically covered annually as well.
Deductible. Some Manulife plans have an annual deductible — a set amount you pay first before coverage kicks in.
Waiting periods. Some plans, especially newer ones or individual policies, have waiting periods before certain benefits become active. Major restorative work and orthodontics are the most common categories with waiting periods.
Predetermination for major work. For larger treatments like crowns, bridges, or dentures, Manulife may require or recommend a predetermination before work begins. We can handle this for you.
How we help Manulife patients
We want you to leave your appointment without surprises on the bill. Here is how we approach it:
- We check your benefits in advance. If you share your Manulife group number and member ID before your appointment, our front desk team will look up your coverage details.
- We direct bill Manulife. We can almost always submit your Manulife claim directly, so you only pay your portion at the visit.
- We work within your plan maximum where clinically appropriate, and will always give you a heads up on any expected out-of-pocket costs.
- We submit predeterminations for major restorative work before we start, so you have a clearer picture of your expected costs.
- We coordinate dual coverage. If you have coverage under two plans — for example, your own Manulife plan and a spouse’s plan — we can coordinate the claims to help reduce what you pay out of pocket.
Want us to check your Manulife benefits?
Contact us with your group number and member ID and we will do our best to look up your coverage before your appointment. We’ll follow up to confirm your benefits and answer any questions.
Direct billing Manulife
- Direct billing is available for most Manulife group plans
- If your plan requires upfront payment and reimbursement, we will let you know ahead of time
- If you have two plans, we can coordinate your benefits so your out-of-pocket costs are reduced
- For larger treatments, we recommend submitting a predetermination ahead of time so you know exactly what your plan will cover
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MANULIFE DENTAL INSURANCE
You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.
Do you accept Manulife dental insurance?
Yes. We work with Manulife regularly and can direct bill most Manulife group plans.
Can you direct bill Manulife?
Yes, almost always. We submit the claim directly to Manulife so you only pay your portion at the visit. We will let you know in advance if anything prevents direct billing for your specific plan.
Does Manulife cover dental cleanings?
Yes. Most Manulife plans cover routine cleanings, typically through a scaling unit allowance of between 6 and 16 units per benefit year. How much of your cleaning is covered depends on your unit allowance and how much scaling your hygienist needs to do. We check this before your hygiene appointment so you know what to expect.
Does Manulife cover Invisalign?
Many Manulife plans do include an orthodontic benefit that applies toward Invisalign, up to a lifetime maximum. More plans include this than most people realize, so it is always worth checking. We can look up your orthodontic benefit before your consultation. Learn more about Invisalign at Tinto Dentistry.
Does Manulife cover dental implants?
More Manulife plans are covering implants than ever before. While older or more basic plans may not include implant coverage, many group plans now include it as part of the major restorative benefit. We can review your coverage and walk you through your options. Learn more about dental implants in St. Clair West.
Does Manulife cover dental crowns?
Many Manulife plans include major restorative coverage that applies to crowns, typically at 50% after your deductible. We recommend submitting a predetermination before crown treatment so you know what to expect. Learn more about restorative dentistry at Tinto Dentistry.
Does Manulife cover Botox?
Some Manulife plans do cover therapeutic Botox — not cosmetic, but Botox used to treat jaw clenching, TMJ-related pain, or chronic headaches linked to bruxism. Coverage varies by plan and typically requires a dental diagnosis. It is worth checking whether your plan includes this benefit before paying out of pocket.
What if I have used up my annual maximum?
Once you have reached your Manulife annual maximum, any remaining costs for the benefit year are your responsibility. We do our best to work within your plan maximum where clinically appropriate, and we will always give you a heads up on any out-of-pocket costs before we start treatment.
Can you check my Manulife benefits before I book?
Yes. Contact us with your group number and member ID and we will do our best to look up your coverage in advance.
