Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures

Still have questions?
What are dentures?
Dentures are custom-made removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and restore the function and appearance of your smile. They are designed to fit comfortably over your gums and can be used to replace a few missing teeth (partial dentures) or a full set of teeth (complete dentures).
What types of dentures are available?
Dentures come in different types, including full dentures, partial dentures (for partial tooth loss), implant-supported dentures, and immediate dentures.
How long does it take to get used to wearing dentures?
Adapting to dentures varies among individuals. Initially, there might be a period of adjustment involving minor discomfort or changes in speech and chewing, but most people adjust within a few weeks. We are always here to help with the journey with adjustments!
How do I care for my dentures?
Our denturist will go over exact denture care, but overall we strongly recommend daily cleaning with a soft brush or denture cleaner, soaking them overnight, and regular dental check-ups. It’s important to handle them carefully as dropping them can damage the denture and break them. We strongly advise against using hot water, toothpaste and or putting dentures in a dish washer as it will distort them.
Can dentures affect eating and speaking?
Initially, there might be some difficulty eating or speaking, but as you get accustomed to the dentures, these challenges generally diminish. Chewing and speaking typically improve with time.
How long do dentures last?
The longevity of dentures can vary. With proper care, they usually last 5-10 years. Over time, changes in the mouth’s structure might necessitate adjustments or replacements.
Can I sleep with my dentures in?
We strongly recommend that you do NOT sleep with dentures in. This can cause infections and other issues that can cause pain and swelling. It is recommended to remove dentures at night to give your gums and jawbone a rest.
