Our TMJ Treatment Services in Toronto

TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular disorder can cause severe pain in the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. Sometimes it is temporary but for some, it is prolonged. Our team will thoroughly examine you through imaging and determine the most suitable treatment plan.

For patients whose nightguard alone isn’t providing enough relief, therapeutic Botox injections can relax the overactive jaw muscles causing your TMD pain.

Night Guards and Sports Guards

Sleep is meant to be restorative. But for many, bruxism causes biting down, clenching or grinding teeth while asleep, which can deteriorate them. Likewise, certain sports can increase the risk of accidents and trauma. Night guards and sports guards are a great solution, and are tailor-made to ensure the best fit.

Still have questions?

Can a nightguard help with TMJ pain?

Yes, a nightguard can be effective in managing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain by preventing the grinding and clenching that contribute to jaw discomfort. Occlusal splint therapy is non-invasive and the first line of treatment for patients who have jaw pain.

If a nightguard isn’t enough, ask us about Botox for jaw clenching as a complementary non-surgical option.

What is a nightguard, and why might I need one?

A nightguard is a dental device designed to protect your teeth from the effects of teeth grinding or clenching during sleep. It helps prevent wear on the teeth and alleviate associated issues like jaw pain and headaches.

How do I know if I need a nightguard?

Signs you may need a nightguard include waking up with jaw pain, headaches, or tooth sensitivity. If we detect or suspect that you are clenching or grinding your teeth at night we may recommend an appliance to help protect your teeth.

Can I buy an over-the-counter nightguard, or do I need a custom one?

While over-the-counter nightguards may offer temporary relief from jaw pain, typically the pain will get worse over time. Over-the-counter nightguards are not made to your bite and may actually cause your bite to feel “off” in the morning. Custom night guards are designed to maintain the proper occlusion and ensure comfort and effectiveness.

How is a custom nightguard made?

We have two options to make a night guard: typical impressions OR you can get a scan done with our iTero digital scanner. This process ensures that the device aligns perfectly with your bite, offering superior comfort and protection.

How long does it take to get used to wearing a nightguard?

It may take a few days to a few weeks to adjust to wearing a nightguard. Most individuals find that they get used to it in a few days.

How do I clean and maintain my nightguard?

Rinse your nightguard with cool water each morning and clean it regularly with a mild soap or denture cleaner. Store it in a dry, ventilated container during the day. We recommend you bring your night guard in each cleaning as we can ultrasonically clean your nightguard for you to get it extra clean.

How long does a nightguard typically last?

The lifespan of a nightguard depends on factors like the severity of teeth grinding and the quality of the device. On average, custom nightguards can last several years with proper care.
