Preventive Dental
Regular check-ups, along with patient education, are key to great oral health. Preventative dentistry can help detect issues early on, or prevent them altogether to minimize the need for more extensive procedures. At Tinto Dentistry, your trusted dentist on St. Clair in Toronto, we encourage and support dental well-being at every age and every stage through supportive and collaborative care.
Checkup
Regular check-ins are meant to assess the health of teeth and gums, catch issues early on, and determine the need for further action.
Dental Scaling
Dental scaling goes deeper than a regular cleaning by removing plaque beneath the gums. Because of this, some form of pain reduction might be recommended, such as using desensitizer or anaesthesia, either topically or locally.
Cleaning
The food and drink we consume leads to excess plaque and tartar build-up on teeth. To help remove it and prevent its negative effects, such as gum disease, regular cleanings are key.
Pediatric Dental Cleaning
We see children of every age! As part of a healthy oral care routine, we strongly recommend bringing your child in for their first visit by the age of 1 or when they get their first tooth.
Fluoride
At Tinto Dentistry, we prioritize preventative care, including the use of fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that plays a significant role in promoting optimal oral health. Our comprehensive approach may include fluoride treatments to prevent potential dental issues.

Still have questions?
How often should I have a dental checkup and cleaning?
We try and be as preventative as possible, and create custom treatment plans for each individual patient. Depending on each patient’s gum disease and cavity risk, we may recommend cleaning intervals from 3,4,6 or 9 months. While we try to work within your individual insurance plan, we will recommend what we think is necessary to keep you as healthy as possible.
When should a child come in for their first dental appointment?
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental appointment around their first birthday or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. Early visits allow our team to monitor your child’s oral development, provide guidance on proper oral care, and establish a positive and comfortable dental experience from an early age. The earlier your child associates the dentist with a positive place, the better their future experience will be. Dr. Tinto keeps a fully stocked toy chest!
Starting dental visits early is key to preventing potential issues and ensuring a lifetime of good oral health. If you have specific concerns or notice any oral changes in your child, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment sooner.
What does a pediatric dental cleaning involve?
Pediatric dental cleanings are gentle and tailored to children’s needs. They include a thorough cleaning, fluoride treatment, and education on proper oral care. Early preventative care sets the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health- we know that kids who don’t get cavities typically become adults that don’t get cavities!
What happens during a routine dental checkup?
A routine checkup involves a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, and other issues. X-rays may be taken if we suspect cavities or gum disease. We will discuss any necessary treatments or preventative measures to help prevent issues before they become a problem!
Is dental scaling painful?
Dental scaling is a non-invasive procedure and is typically not painful. Depending on how sensitive your teeth and gums are, you may need local anesthesia. It is a crucial part of preventative care, removing plaque and tartar to prevent gum disease and maintain overall oral health.
Are there natural ways to prevent gum disease?
In addition to regular dental care, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding tobacco can contribute to preventing gum disease. Maintaining good oral hygiene will not only help you keep your teeth clean, it will also help keep your whole body healthy –including your heart!
What are the benefits of professional teeth cleaning?
Professional teeth cleaning removes plaque and tartar, preventing cavities and gum disease. It also helps maintain fresh breath and contributes to the overall health of your teeth and gums. Clean, calculus-free teeth are less prone to getting cavities and therefore last longer!
Does dental insurance cover preventative services?
Most dental insurance plans cover preventative services, including checkups and cleanings. We can help verify your insurance coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket expenses during your visit. We can help you understand terms such as “scaling units” and frequency.
