Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) plan – The basics explained
Hello! At Tinto Dentistry, we have always made it a commitment to make dental care affordable and accessible to everyone in Toronto, with specific focus to the community around St Clair West. Thats why we were on-board right away when the Canadian Government introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan(CDCP) plan last May. O ver the last year, the plan has expanded to conclude more individuals and as of now, the CDCP is now available to most Canadians, it’s an excellent opportunity to take care of something you may have been neglecting in the past with minimal or no out-of-pocket expenses!
I’ve written this as an introduction to help explain the basics of the plan in plain language for our patients to understand. This will be a series of blogs so that St. Clair west residents can understand the new plan in easier language.
Who Is Eligible?
As of right now (May 2025), Canadians of all ages can apply for the program.
As of right now these are the current requirements:
- Do not have access to private dental insurance.
- Have an adjusted family net income under $90,000.- meaning together you and your partner/ spouse do not have an income greater than $90,000
- Are a Canadian resident for tax purposes (meaning you’ve filing your taxes to the CRA last year
- Have filed your 2024 tax return. ( ITS IMPORTANT** this is how they decide on if you are eligible or not!!)
TL;DR (too long, didn’t read): Any Canadian who has filed their taxes in the last year (2024) and has an adjusted net family income of LESS THAN $90,000 should be eligible
What’s Covered?
Now let’s go over the bare basics of what is covered from the CDCP plan. This will be a very brief overview and I’ll have another post explaining the general of what is actually covered.
- Exams and X Rays
- If you want to come in and become a regular patient, we provide comprehensive new patient examinations to check your overall health and help identify future problems and how to prevent them.
- Do you have an issue that you want to get looked at? Well now with the CDCP you don’t have to worry. If you have a tooth thats hurting, broken tooth, broken filling or generalized face pain you can now come into the clinic and get your problem looked at
- Cleanings
- The CDCP plan covers 4 units of scaling (1 hour, each unit is 15 minutes) of cleaning every 12 months.
- Fillings
- If you have a cavity, a broken or chipped tooth, the CDCP has a very comprehensive coverage to help prevent teeth from getting broken and infected! More info here
- Extractions:
- One amazing feature is the CDCP plan covers getting a tooth pulled. Either a tooth that is infected or broken and can’t be saved, at least now you can get it extracted painlessly at Tinto dentistry (more information and FAQs here
- Root canal treatments
- A procedure done to remove an infection from a tooth without extracting the tooth.
- Dentures
- Fake teeth to help replace missing teeth that have been extracted
- Complete dentures (someone without ANY teeth) can be done right away
- Partial dentures ( missing some teeth) may be covered but require us send a pre-authorization
- More Here (and FAQS)
Coverage levels vary based on income:
- 100% coverage for incomes under $70,000
- Reduced coverage (40%-60% coverage) for incomes between $70,000 and $89,999
Our Commitment to CDCP Patients

Currently, we are charging only the CDCP fees, which means that patients covered at 100% will not have any additional costs in most situations*.
